Spring is here, and with it the promise of sunny drives and unforgettable road trips around Cape Town. Before you hit the N2 or cruise Chapman’s Peak, make sure your car is truly road-ready. A quick pre-trip check can prevent breakdowns and keep your journey smooth. Start by popping the hood: top up engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer water. These fluids keep your engine cool, brakes firm, and windscreen clear, even under hot summer skies.

Next, test your battery. Heat can accelerate battery wear, and a weak battery means you might be stranded far from home. If your car hesitates when starting or if the battery case is swollen, consider replacement before your trip. Also inspect your wiper blades – if they streak or skip, swap them out. Clear visibility is crucial, especially if summer afternoon showers catch you on the road.

Tyres: Inflate all tyres to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure and check tread depth. (South Africa law requires at least 1mm tread.) Don’t forget the spare!

Lights: Test headlights, brake lights, indicators and hazard lights. Proper lighting keeps you visible to other drivers, day or night.

Load & Kit: Avoid overloading your vehicle, which can reduce steering control and increase stopping distance. Pack an emergency kit with snacks, water, a torch, jumper cables and a basic toolset.

Finally, plan your route and stay informed. Know your stops and check for roadworks or delays on the N1, N2, and other popular routes. With your car serviced and packed, you’ll travel more safely and with confidence.
